Currently Reading: There Once Lived a Woman Who Tried to Kill Her Neighbor’s Baby by Ludmilla Petrushevskaya

A town succumbs to a disfiguring plague.

A colonel is visited in a dream by his dead wife, warning him not to lift the veil from the face of her corpse.

An orphan accosted by a gang of teenage boys is delivered from violence by a woman who looks suspiciously like her long-lost mother.

An enormously obese woman named Marilena becomes, for two hours every night, the lithe and beautiful dancing twin sisters Maria and Elena.

A woman is followed by a man who claims to be her husband – months after she attends her husband’s funeral.

I am halfway through this fantastic collection of short stories and I am enjoying every second of it. It is mildly disturbing (especially the one with the cat) and sad and haunting. I am taking my time as I don’t want to part with it yet.

This was a post by Hanna, whose mother is watching 8 Women at this very moment.
